His CD I Believe, to be released early in 2014, is Roberto Iarussi’s tribute to the life-affirming values of faith and faith’s properties of rescue. Conducted and arranged by multi-Grammy Award musical polymath Jorge Calandrelli and played by the world class London Symphony Orchestra, the CD’s synthesis of the dignity of classical expression with the immediacy of the pop idiom makes for an album of immediate returns to any fan of the tenor voice regardless of level of sophistication. In his upcoming concerts, Roberto Iarussi will offer numbers from I Believe in addition to full-throated operatic arias. Such transitioning speaks to his prowess as a technician and interpreter. Even more so, it points to his grateful receipt of the rewards of the faith that sustained him when circumstances called not for singing but grieving, when he did not know whether the future had in store for him a life as a singer at all. Roberto Iarussi’s voice uplifts because its energies are enriched by the assurance of deliverance through faith. It is thus no idle summary of Roberto Iarussi’s life so far to quote from Rabindranath Tagore: “Faith is the bird that feels the light and sings when the dawn is still dark.” Into whatever our own darknesses may be, Roberto Iarussi’s voice comes like rays from a brilliant star that tell us it is darkness’s destiny to be dispersed by light.
